This reflects a clear shift in the vision of science and research: sharing knowledge early transforms science from a slow, closed system into a dynamic and open process. Digital technologies make this possible by enabling real-time access, continuous updates, and global dissemination, turning knowledge into an evolving flow rather than a static product. At the same time, collaborative platforms broaden participation, fostering distributed, interdisciplinary contributions and continuous peer engagement.
While this approach accelerates discovery and enriches perspectives, it also requires balancing speed with rigor. Early sharing must be accompanied by transparency about uncertainty and mechanisms for ongoing validation. In this sense, digital and collaborative technologies do not simply speed up science they reshape it into a collective, iterative conversation where progress depends as much on how knowledge is shared as on what is discovered.
Open Science is therefore a movement aimed at ensuring barrier-free access to scientific knowledge for both the scientific community and society at large, grounded in the principles of transparency, inclusion, integrity, fairness, and sharing. Its scope is broad: it encompasses research publications and data, the sharing of both final results and intermediate steps, open educational resources, and open software, hardware, and infrastructures that support the creation and dissemination of knowledge. It also promotes the involvement of citizens and diverse social actors, as well as inclusive forms of communication, to ensure a meaningful impact of science on society.
Our two cents: the real transformation is cultural. Digital and collaborative technologies are powerful tools, but they truly work only when supported by a mindset that sees knowledge not as property to be protected, but as a shared space to be cultivated.
